2022 EENC Pre-Conference Field Trip: Horton Grove Nature Preserve & Stagville State Historic Site

Historic Stagville is a state historic site that includes the remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30,000 acres of land, and claimed ownership over about 900 people who were enslaved on this property. Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation. Following a tour of Stagville, join the Triangle Land Conservancy on a 2-3 mile hike at their Horton Grove Nature Preserve, which protects over 700 acres of land connected to the historic site.

Field Trip Details:

• Registrants will meet at the Historic Stagville Site for parking:  5925 Jock Rd, Bahama, NC 27503
• From there, the group will access the Triangle Land Conservancy trail system via a gravel road. The trail is a dirt path, relatively flat but narrow at times. It is not an ADA accessbile trail. Visit this page for more information about the trail.
• There are no restrooms where the tour takes place, but there is a restroom at the Stagville Visitor Center, a one mile drive away from the meeting location. Please plan accordingly.

Logistics: This workshop is limited to 20 in-person participants.

Please bring a water bottle, a snack, and weather appropriate clothing for being outdoors.

This field trip will be eligible for 3 hours of Criteria II/Continuing Ed for the NC EE Certification.

COVID Safety Requirements: This field trip will take place primarily outdoors. Masks are not currently required at this location.  We will be following the most up-to-date safety guidelines recommended by the CDC based on Community Levels. As things are constantly changing, you will hear from the facilitator about any specific requirements as the date approaches.

Registration for this workshop may be canceled up until 7 days before the official start date for a full refund, minus a $10 cancellation fee, by emailing director@eenc.org. No refunds will be offered for cancellations after July 23.
